Where is Centerville, Indiana

Centerville, Indiana, is in Wayne County, eastern Indiana, near Richmond. The heart of Centerville is along National Road 40 and a short distance from Interstate 70. It is a little under an hour and a half from Cincinnati, Ohio, and an hour from Dayton, Ohio.

Hometown pride takes on significant meaning as locals strive to positively impact their community. Many locals were eager to share what made them proud of Centerville, from stories of historic architecture to lifting the small businesses dotted throughout town.

The town doesn’t have a Target, and it may only have a single stoplight, but what it does have is a spirit of community and growth that one can only dream of finding in the town you call home.

Planning The Perfect Getaway To Centerville

Centerville is part of Antique Alley, meaning I had big plans to find treasures! With that in mind, I gathered a few of my closest gal friends to plan a weekend of antique hunting, flower picking, and beer tasting.

After grabbing a cup of coffee from Auntie Em’s Coffee and Pie, visit the Centerville Antique Mall. It is the most significant stop along Indiana’s Antique Alley; therefore, expect to spend a few hours strolling the antique-laden aisles.

Walking down memory lane is one of the many reasons I love antiquing. I am always guaranteed to spot something my grandmother owned or even something I used to own! Denial is in full force when I see toys from the ’80s and ’90s appear on the shelves!

Wheeler Antiques and Black Sheep Antiques can be found on Main Street Centerville. An amusing fact is that Wheeler Antiques has two buildings on opposite sides of the road. This was partly due to a theory that if one side of the street burned down, they would still open the next day!

I opted for the foot detox, which proved to be an enlightening experience. The owner, Gina, was incredible. Knowledgeable is an understatement to how well-versed she is in holistic medicine. As a nurse practitioner, she has seen both the traditional and holistic side of medicine and strives to provide her clients with the best options for their overall well-being.

Even if you opt out of doing a service, step inside the building to see all the natural products and supplements available for purchase.

More Great Things To Do In Centerville, Indiana

Dive into the History of Main Street Centerville

Centerville, dating from the early 1800s, served as an essential stop along the National Road. Take time to stroll the historical downtown area to see the log cabin courthouse, canon ball holes in the library, and the Mansion, which once served as the backdrop for a rebellion against the tavern located inside.

Fun Fact: The women had enough of the men spending time at the tavern, so they assembled and charged the tavern, busting beer kegs in their wake. The woman leading the charge was horrified to find out her son had accrued the highest tab.

The History of the 5 Arches

Centerville is known as the “City of Arches” due to the five main arches on the Old National Road.  When the town was first built, the streets were originally 100 feet wide, but with the increased activity in town, when it became the county seat, the width decreased to 65 feet.

To fill in the gap, buildings with common walls were erected in front of the original buildings. The original buildings could then be reached through the archways, which were used to get behind the buildings and into the backyards of the houses.

The Centerville Farmer’s Market

Taking place on Saturdays from early May through late October, Centerville’s Farmer’s Market promises some of the finest and freshest produce and an enjoyable opportunity to connect with local farmers and businesses.

The Farmer’s Market takes place at Maplewood Park from 4 to 7 p.m.! During our visit, there was a free bouncy house for the kids, and the nearby Train Display and historic Caboose were open to the public!

Get Coffee at Village Forager and Shop at Bendy Farm

Grab a coffee or specialty tea from The Village Forager before browsing their unique selection of gifts. Loose leaf tea, bath & body items, pottery, and jewelry- all in one shop. Take advantage of purchasing a few of their gourmet food items before venturing to Bendy Farm next door.

Bendy Farm is a unique general store that is zero-waste and 100% Gluten-Free. With plenty of organic/non-GMO, Allergen-Friendly, and vegan options, many flock here to stock up and find new natural products.

Note: Both places are closed on Sundays.

See The Train Display and Historic Caboose

Train enthusiasts will love to catch the outdoor train display at Maplewood Park. The beautifully restored 1907 Caboose is open for tours on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays from April to October. However, follow along on their Facebook page for openings and special events.
