On the hunt for a great Ohio family getaway? Look no further than the Mohican State Park Lodge!
Tucked away in the scenic beauty of Mohican State Park is the Mohican Lodge and Conference Center. Cozy up in a rocking chair next to the fireplace, enjoy a delicious meal overlooking Pleasant Hill Lake, then take a refreshing dip in the pool.
The Mohican Lodge makes the ideal spot for a family vacation during your visit to the Mohican area. In this post, we share our must-do things while visiting the Mohican State Park Lodge and a guide to fun activities in the area.
We would like to thank Great Ohio Lodges for sponsoring this post. As always, opinions are our own.
Mohican State Park is a 1,110-acre park located on the south shore of Pleasant Hill Lake, five miles south of Loudonville in Ashland County, Ohio, United States. It is in northeastern Ohio, roughly a half-hour from Mansfield, Ohio.
Mohican State Park is a popular tourist area with top sights, including Lyons Falls, Clear Fork Gorge, and the Mohican State Scenic River. Guests can make a day trip or a week-long getaway exploring all the beautiful landscapes from land and water.
There is no fee to enter the State Park. A map of the park and its amenities can be found on the Ohio Department of Natural Resources website.
The ideal place to stay while exploring Mohican State Park is at the Mohican Lodge. Mohican is one of the Ohio state park lodges which offers guests full-service accommodations, including a restaurant, year-round amenities, and spacious rooms.
The Mohican Lodge makes a perfect weekend getaway, with it being only a 90-minute drive from Columbus and Cleveland.
The drive from Cincinnati is a little under 3 hours.
Address: 1098 Ashland Co Rd. 3006, Perrysville, OH 44864
The lodge offers a variety of guest rooms, including Queen Rooms, King Rooms, and Accessibility Rooms. Each room has a private balcony complete with chairs and a small table. I recommend a room overlooking the lake, if possible.
Rooms include a mini-fridge, in-room coffee maker, hair dryers, and shampoo and conditioner. The rooms may feel a bit dated, but they are spacious, clean, and comfortable.
A Few Tips:
Parents know that an indoor pool can be a lifesaver during the chilly winter months. Mohican not only offers a large indoor pool, but they also have a sauna. The pool area offers plenty of seating, tables, and towels.
During the summer months, Mohican opens its outdoor pool which has a shallow and a deep end. A fenced-in, 1-foot pool is also open during the summer months, ideal for little ones.
Tip: The sauna is in the indoor pool area and could easily be mistaken for a pool storage area. That wooden hut is a sauna!
If you have an Ohio Parks Passport Book, you can get your Mohican State Park stamp inside the gift shop. Visitors do not have to be guests of the lodge to come to dine at the restaurant or browse the gift shop. The gift shop has a variety of unique Ohio trinkets, Mohican souvenirs, toys, and a selection of local food and wine.
A staple of the Mohican Lodge is the brilliant fireplace that overlooks Pleasant Hill Lake in the main lobby. Rocking chairs line the massive windows looking out onto the lake, while others circle the fireplace making it a cozy retreat.
When the weather decided to take a snowy turn, the fireplace became our sanctuary. The fireplace is a beautiful gathering spot, but it is also in the lobby where many other activities occur.
Take part in a scavenger hunt, watch a little TV, play a game of table tennis in the game room or claim a card table to create your own game night. Be sure to bring your camera to capture those picture-perfect memories.
One of the top things to do at Mohican Lodge is to have dinner at Bromfield’s Dining Room. With sweeping views of the lake, a roaring fire in the stone fireplace, and gourmet entrees, it is easy to see why reservations are often recommended.
Bromfield’s is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, giving the lodge and Mohican State Park guests an excellent dining option. The dinner menu had a wide selection of entrees from salmon, burgers, chicken, and a variety of appetizers.
For a delicious carry-out option, order pizza from Boxer’s Lounge. Boxer’s Lounge offers a full-service bar offering spirits, cocktails, beer, and wine. Pizza can be ordered to enjoy in the Lounge or for carry-out. We opted for carry-out to enjoy in one of the lodge’s many gathering areas while playing games.
Fun Fact: Boxer’s Lounge was named after Louis Bromfield’s pet dogs.
Take time to get out to explore the surrounding forest around the lodge. The beautiful scenery of the adjacent state forest will have you conquering more hiking trails than you originally planned. Download a map of the trails and plan your adventure.
A few popular hikes are exploring the Pleasant Hill Dam, climbing the fire tower, and venturing to the covered bridge. The natural features of the Mohican region can be seen throughout the Mohican State Memorial Forest.
Many opt to take a short walk about the lodge which yields fabulous lakeside views and plenty of peaceful benches.
Tip: Be sure to stop at the striking Clearfork Gorge Overlook.
The Mohican State Lodge offers a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities, including basketball courts, volleyball courts, a playground, shuffleboards, walking trails, and plenty of picnic tables.
Malabar Farm is the famous 900-acre farm of the author, Louis Bromfield. The farm is now a historic site offering guests the opportunity to go on a scenic wagon ride throughout the property.
After your ride, visit with farmyard friends in the barn, then browse the gift shop in the visitors center. The gift shop is full of local goodies, including farm-fresh products.
Bromfield’s home was where Humphery Bogart and Lauren Bacall were wed. Guided tours of Bromfield’s home are available on Fridays and Saturdays. Tickets can be purchased at the gift shop.
Beat the heat with a nice paddle down the Mohican River. Bring your own kayak or rent one from Mohican Adventures. They also offer river trips, river tube rentals, canoes, and kayaks.
Roughly a half-hour away from the Mohican Lodge is downtown Mansfield, home to a lovely children’s museum. Have your little ones go grocery shopping, dress up to perform on stage, or pretend to be dentists!
The Little Buckeye Museum is two floors of interactive exhibits.
Be sure to swing by the Richland Carrousel Park while visiting the downtown area.
Mohican Adventures is your one-stop-shop for family fun! In addition to river tubing, they also offer an aerial adventure park, mini-golf, go-karts, a family campground, and cabin rentals.
A unique way to see the Mohican Memorial State Forest is on horseback. Equestrian Valley Farm offers a variety of rides for all types of riders, including large groups.
